Panchamahabhoota and Tridosha Theories

Ayurveda believes that Man is a miniature version of the Universe, so the basic composition of Man and the Universe/Nature is the same. The universe is made up of five basic elements (Material Substances) namely,

  • Prithvi (Earth)
  • Agni (Fire),
  • Jala (Water)
  • Vayu (Air)
  • Akash (Space/Ether)

These are known as Pancha- (5) and Mahabhootas (Elements)
Along with these, there are Three Non-Material substances, namely,]

  1. Satva (Consciousness or Knowledge)
  2. Raja (Motion or Action)
  3. Tama ( inertia).

These three are known as Tri-Gunas. Tri (3) and Gunas (Qualities) are the basic constitutions of matter. Depending on the predominance of these elements, and their activation in the body, three functional energies are formed which are known as the Doshas. They are three in number, namely,

  • Vata (Air energy)
  • Pitta(Fire energy)
  • Kapha( Water Energy)

These elements of Ayurveda can be perceived by their distinctive qualities such as Akash by Sound, Vayu by Touch, Agni by Colour, Jala by Taste, and Pruthvi by Odour. These are the basics of our Five Senses which are perceived by our Sensory Organs, Ears, Skin, Eyes, Tongue, and Nose, respectively.

Connection of Panchamahabhootas and Doshas in Ayurveda:

  • Vata = Vayu + Akash
  • Pitta = Agni
  • Kapha = Pruthvi + Jala
